Donating blood has never been something that I’ve ever doubted that I would do. And even though I don’t personally know anyone who has needed to receive blood, the action is very important to me.
During my time here, at Incept, I’ve heard a lot of stories from people who have needed blood, and it’s opened my eyes to why donating is so important.
Did you know that of the large majority of people in the United States that are eligible to donate blood, only 5% of the population actually does? Sadly, the number of transfusions nationwide increases by 9% each year. The numbers just don’t add up. This is why I donate.
I am proud to be able to say that I help save three lives each time I donate. But working at Incept, I know that I am part of something bigger. Each person that I schedule to donate also has that same opportunity to save the lives of others. And with over 100 fellow employees working beside me, the impact that we make as a team is pretty impressive.
Think about this: When every Incept employee schedules one appointment, we are helping save nearly 400 lives! When I sit down and really think about the impact that this little company in Canton, Ohio makes every day, I realize that while it may not seem to be much, my donation really does make a difference.
There are so many people in my life that I care about and if any one of them needed blood, I would hope that it would be available for them. While the most common reason for not donating seems to be “I’m too busy,” the reality is that it doesn’t take a lot of time (I am able to donate a unit of blood in about four minutes), it’s not painful and you get free cookies and juice afterward (who wouldn’t want free cookies?).
So I will continue to donate blood each time I’m eligible. I will schedule donations to the best of my ability. I will continue to make a difference – no matter how big or small it may be – in the lives of those in need. My hope is that you will too.
